Judas, the one who betrayed the Master

Following in the footsteps of Christ through the Sanctuaries associated with His Passion, we arrive at Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives. The second stage of the Lenten pilgrimage promoted by the Custody of the Holy Land is held here, with a lively participation of local faithful and pilgrims. Next to the Basilica, there is the "Garden of Olives" which invites to the experience of meditation on Christ's total entrustment to the will of the Father. A "so be it" that passes through the experience of betrayal. Fr Carlo Giuseppe Adesso, of the Italian diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro, official preacher of the Lenten itinerary, spoke of Judas, the one who handed Jesus over in exchange for 30 pieces of silver coins. A gesture with which the apostle broke his communion with Christ and the other disciples. Fr CARLO GIUSEPPE ADESSO Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro "St. John uses to define this splendid place with the term 'kephos,' which in Greek means 'flower garden.' Starting from this intuition, some Church fathers have made a very suggestive comparison: just as the first man betrayed God's trust in the earthly paradise, which was a garden, in the same way Judas betrayed the friendship of Our Lord Jesus in a garden." The Mass presided over by Brother Stéphane Milovitch was celebrated in the Basilica of the Agony, or "of the Nations," due to the fact that it was built with the contribution of several nations, whose symbols are represented on the inside of the domes. The Eucharistic celebration took place on the high altar, at the foot of which is the "Stone of Agony", on which, according to tradition, Christ sweated blood. In his homily, the preacher spoke about the betrayal of Judas, taken from chapter 6 of John's Gospel, which includes the "Bread of Life" discourse and speaks of the disciples' resistance. Fr CARLO GIUSEPPE ADESSO Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro "Judas appears at the end of the great talk Jesus gives on the Bread of Life. Then he disappears to reappear again on the eve of the Passion, then in Bethany, but especially during the Last Supper. I said to myself: the betrayal began in the heart of Judas in Capernaum, thus in a Eucharistic context. This means that just as Christ handed himself over in the Eucharist - in Latin we say tradere - so Judas handed the Lord over to his enemies". Fr. Carlo Giuseppe called for vigilance, so that the darkness that took hold of Judas' heart does not lead us too to disappointment and abandonment of faith. Fr CARLO GIUSEPPE ADESSO Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro "Let's think of all the times we could do something, we could say something, and we don't. Of all the times that the name of Jesus is erased, so as not to offend those who don't think or believe as we do. The most dangerous betrayal is what we call the 'sin of omission'. In theory, we are doing an act of respect, but when we turn the coin on the other side, it is a betrayal of the Lord. We may need to reflect on this a little more."
