Orthodox Easter: the miracle of light

A roar, mixed with joy and tears, welcomes the light coming out of the Holy Sepulchre... in a few minutes, it spreads throughout the Basilica...from the candles of the Greek Patriarch...from the side windows of the wayside shrine. The miracle of fire, gift from the Risen Christ, announces Orthodox Easter once again this year.
Pilgrim
"What I'm feeling is unspeakable. He's really risen."
"I'm not afraid to burn myself... because this is a holy light and for 33 minutes it doesn't burn!"
The orthodox Saturday of light is one of the most crowded celebrations in Jerusalem. From the early hours of dawn, the Old Town is closed by the police. Inside the ancient walls, there are few privileged ones with the local faithful. Like Irin, a Coptic Christian, who arrived with her husband from Cairo.
IRIN
"I only slept an hour last night, but it's worth it! “
"We got up at 4:00 this morning."
The task of knocking on the door of the Basilica belongs to the Armenians... they are the first to enter the Holy Sepulchre, followed by the representatives of the other Orthodox communities. Everyone has their place, around the aedicula of the Holy Sepulchre. The last to arrive are the young Christians of the neighbourhood... who do not go unnoticed...
The Greek Patriarch Theophilus III, surrounded by a crowd, the procession begins around the aedicula. Three rounds accompanied by an invocation to God to make Him appear through the holy light.
After removing the liturgical vestments, Theophilus III enters the Holy Sepulchre. With him, in the antechamber, there is the Armenian Patriarch, the only witness to the miracle. All the candles and other lights of the Basilica are turned off... while the Greek Patriarch invokes in the empty tomb the sign of the Resurrection: the prodigious lighting of the holy fire.
The bells of the Holy Sepulchre ring for a long time... the miraculous light spreads even outside the Basilica... through the lighted lamps of the pilgrims...
Local Christian
"I bring home, to my family, the light of Easter."
The holy fire illuminates the torches of the scouts... in the festive march around the walls of the Old Town.
