The Way of the Cross on Good Friday

Praying the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem is a unique and special experience. Pilgrims from all parts of the world are given the opportunity to make a living memory of what Jesus lived in the last hours of his life, retracing his steps along those paths from where everything began.
The Way of the Cross, in the current sense of the term, dates back to the Middle Ages. The flourishing of pilgrimages occurred since the 12th century and the Franciscan Friars Minor's stable presence in the "holy places" dates back to 1333.
Every year millions of pilgrims travel the 14 stations of the Sorrowful Way. This year, due to the Corona Virus pandemic, Br. Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land, together with only four friars, retraced the last moments of Jesus' life. Today we are all invited to remember what Jesus lived in the last hours of his life.

"Walking through the empty streets on Good Friday and celebrating the Way of the Cross with 4 friars and an escort like the one we had today certainly gives an idea of the gravity of the situation the world is experiencing. When I also think about doing the Way of the Cross in this way I think of the dismay that the world is experiencing, the anguish that the world is experiencing. It is as if we feel the anguish of the world and at the same time it is as if we feel that by walking His own personal Way of the Cross, Jesus has taken the anguish of the world upon Himself."
The special "Jerusalem - the City of the Historical Way of the Cross - 2019" is available on the website of the Christian media center.
