St Peter and Paul in Jaffa: an "international" meeting

About 60 kilometers from Jerusalem is the beautiful church dedicated to St. Peter. A parish that belongs to the Custody of the Holy Land and in which intense pastoral activity takes place. Br EDUARDO SÁNCHEZ VÉLEZ, ofm Guardian, parochial vicar - Jaffa Our pastoral activity here in St. Peter's is very interesting. We have several migrant communities. With the friars we try to help them in their spiritual, sacramental life. A celebration, the one for Saints Peter and Paul, moved to Saturday so everyone could participate. The Catholic community of Jewish expression, the Filipino, Polish, Indian and Latin American communities were present: all there to be fed by the word of God and the Eucharistic bread. Presiding at the Mass was Brother Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land, who was warmly welcomed by the local community. Br FRANCESCO PATTON, ofm Custos of the Holy Land Both the community that meets here in St. Peter's and the community that meets in St. Anthony's, also in Jaffa, are two international communities and therefore they also show the face of Pentecost. It is no accident that his dream is depicted here in St. Peter's Church: in the Acts of the Apostles, it is told that Peter sees this sheet descending from heaven with all kinds of animals, and God invites him to eat because God has purified everything. In this way he teaches Peter that he must also open himself to the Gentiles, to those who are not part of the people of Israel. Faithful lay people from different nations attending and cooperating in parish activities, each with his own gift. GIRLIE MELAD Filipina I am part of the choir and every Sunday we gather here to sing in the parish. I am part of the English-speaking Filipino community of St. Peter's Church in Jaffa of Tel Aviv. Whenever I am here I feel "at peace," my heart is blessed, and I feel God's love surrounding me. HELENA PRADILLA Colombia We collaborate a lot with the priest, for example with the readings. When he asks us for help, we say yes: even when he asks us to cook, we cook... we come with much joy! Being able to contribute means giving my life to God, and in that I find peace. It is also a very popular place for tourists. The doors of the church are always open! DOLLY RUIZ Colombia Sometimes I come here to pray, to worship the Blessed Sacrament in silence. But it's almost impossible because tourists come in frequently. But thank God for tourism; it's increased a lot lately. Br FRANCESCO PATTON, ofm Custos of the Holy Land In Jaffa, the church becomes a universal, international Catholic church, and for me it is very beautiful and significant that our two parishes in Jaffa are not two ethnic parishes but international parishes. Two places, parishes that are today what they were called to be in the beginning, when the Apostle Peter had this vision of openness. It meant a Church not closed on one ethnicity but open to all peoples.
