"Blessed is he who comes, in the name of the Lord." This acclamation resounded throughout the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher, the place where Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose again.
Holy Week opened in Jerusalem with the Mass and procession of the Palms, presided over by His Beatitude Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Patriarch of Jerusalem of the Latins.
After the blessing of the palms and olive branches, the clergy and faithful, in procession, circled the Wayside Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre three times, before moving on to the Stone of Anointing.
The Church on this day commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, to bring to completion His Paschal Mystery.
The celebration culminated with the Eucharistic liturgy. The Patriarch then presided over the solemn Mass, together with 3 bishops and 130 priests belonging to the various religious communities from around the world.
This Sunday's liturgy of the Word is meant to lead to the understanding that Calvary and Anastasis are the paschal places of the one and only mystery of Salvation.
The Gospel text, recounting the Passion of Jesus, was sung by 3 cantors.
The images of Palm Sunday, the first of the celebrations of Holy Week, remain engraved in everyone's memory and heart. In Jerusalem this takes on a deeper meaning and full of emotion, because it is the place where the events of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus took place.
