Taizé was an ordinary village, rather isolated, when Brother Roger first arrived there at the beginning of World War II. Brother Roger began receiving Jewish refugees in a house he had purchased. After the war, some of the young men who became the first brothers joined the Taizé community. They consecrated their lives to live together in celibacy and the simplicity of life, devoted to their own labor and refusing any donations. They prayed together every day in the village church. Before long, many visitors began to arrive. In order to receive this ever-increasing number and to allow everyone to participate in prayer, it became necessary to build a larger church. At the same time, the community has created moments and spiritual spaces in which to prepare young adults to reflect on their lives and work. This was the beginning of the adventure of the Taizé group with young people.
