A life in abeyance

STEPHEN KAMEL BOUTROS Iraqi refugee in Jordan "When the city of Mosul fell on June 28, 2014, the members of the Islamic State (ISIS) stopped me on the road and beat me. The wounds you see on my head are due to my head hitting the truck." MAYADA HABBO HORMUZ Iraqi refugee in Jordan "I was later told that Stephen had been beaten up by Daesh and that he was in the hospital. When he returned home, my children, especially Sandro, burst into tears. It was heartbreaking for the children to see their father in such a condition." Six years have already passed since that day and that night when Stephen and his family were forced to flee from Mosul, Iraq. An escape that led them to leave their homes and most of their possessions in a hurry. Apparently, a family like any other. Mum, dad and 3 young children... but in their eyes, there are unforgettable memories of a past that no longer exists and a future that needs to be rewritten. Their life is "in abeyance". STEPHEN KAMEL BOUTROS Iraqi refugee in Jordan "When I arrived in Amman it was raining, life was hard and at that moment I wanted to go back to Iraq. But I realized that I can' t go back because there is no security there, while here there is. If I go to Baghdad, I will be afraid to send my children to school, so I want to stay in Jordan." The photos of those who remained, show the devastation: a life that no longer exists. So far from home, so far from affection and with an uncertain future it is even more difficult to heal those wounds. MAYADA HABBO HORMUZ Iraqi refugee in Jordan "Life here is very difficult and although we eat, drink and sometimes laugh, we miss our parents, I miss my mother." MAYADA HABBO HORMUZ Iraqi refugee in Jordan "Now we are scattered in many places and sometimes we feel depressed and sad because we can't forget what happened to my husband and to us in the past." STEPHEN KAMEL BOUTROS Iraqi refugee in Jordan "It was a great shock and surprise. When I first saw the photos I received via Messenger, it was very difficult for me to see my house destroyed. However, now things have become normal for me. Nevertheless, I feel that something is broken inside me. I am primarily concerned about the future of my children because the suffering of their parents affects the lives of the children." STEPHEN KAMEL BOUTROS Iraqi refugee in Jordan "Hope exists and God will help us one day."
