The Lenten pilgrimage continues. In this second station, the Franciscans celebrated the Eucharist in the Basilica of Agony in Gethsemane. The sanctuary of Gethsemane, which this year celebrates its centenary, is the work of the Italian architect Barluzzi. It includes both the garden where Jesus went to pray with Peter, James and John, who were with him on the mountain of the Transfiguration and the rock on which he alone wept tears of blood and abandoned himself to the will of the Father. Br DIEGO DALLA GASSA, ofm Gethsemane Hermitage “For us celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of this Basilica means stepping into that time, but we are always faced with mystery. Can the mystery disappear? No. For us, celebrating this pilgrimage, this important station which leads us towards Easter, means touching with our hands the places where the Lord once lived. We always need it because the Lord tells us how much He loved us.” For the celebration of the Eucharist, numerous friars gathered together with local Christians and pilgrims. Br. Stephane Milovitch presided over the Mass, while Br. Ramzi Sidawi gave the homily. "Watch and pray not to be tempted." Here Jesus asks us to "watch and pray". Every vigil has its own reason, as Brother Ramzi stressed in his homily. And our reason, the reason for our vigil, of waiting, of being inclined towards something, we must live it in prayer, as Jesus did. Jesus tells us to pray, confirming His yes, confirming His gift to the Father. Br DIEGO DALLA GASSA, ofm Gethsemane Hermitage "In this particular shrine, He lives his passion, He sweats blood. It is always a great mystery and we are never tired of sensing and we always need to hear how much He loved us. Through these celebrations it's as if He is saying again: 'I loved you, I truly loved you, I loved you to death'." From here, from Gethsemane, Jesus was taken away under arrest, to be judged and condemned. These will be the stations of the next Lenten prayer.
