On the Way of the Cross

On Good Friday, [pilgrims and faithful] walked through the 14 stations of the Via Dolorosa, from the place known as Pilate’s Praetorium to Golgotha, the place of the Crucifixion. This is a deeply rooted tradition and legacy that has been carried on by the Franciscans since the 13th century, and it continues today. As per tradition, local Christians and religious—along with a river of pilgrims from all over the world—led by the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land, followed the Cross and wound through the Holy City’s narrow streets. There were stops at various chapels that correspond to the traditional stations of the Stations of the Cross, so as to give people time to pray and reflect on the specific moments of Jesus’ Passion. Every step of the way, they proclaimed their faith and placed their hands where Jesus placed his, and they carried his Cross like the Cyrenian did, thus preparing their hearts for the greatest of joys: victory over death.
