Communicate, relate, build communion: these are the key words chosen by the new Custos of the Holy Land, Br. Francesco Patton, after his solemn entrance into the Upper Room, at the Christian Sion, Wednesday, June 8. After a short procession of friars from the monastery of St. Savior, preceded by the kawas, the official entry of the Custos took place, accompanied by various religious and faithful, in one of the places most cherished in the Holy Land by the Franciscans. "The official entry of the Custos into the Holy Cenacle that took place today has a special meaning for the Custody of the Holy Land: this place was the first Franciscan monastery here, in the Holy Land. From 1342 until 1551, this place was the uninterrupted seat of the Custos of the Holy Land. The Custos of the Holy Land has the appellation of ‘Guardian of the Holy Mount Zion and of the Holy Sepulcher’.” Even after the expulsion of the friars in 1551, the place has not lost its meaning. It was here that, according to tradition, Jesus washed the feet of the apostles. It was here that he instituted the Eucharist and it was always here that the disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit. The entrance of the Custos was, therefore, accompanied by the singing of the hymn ‘Veni Creator Spiritus’, followed by the reading of the Acts of the Apostles which tells the descent of the Spirit and the Lord's Prayer. father Patton recalled during his speech. "It is only by accepting the Spirit of the Lord - he urged in conclusion - that we will be able to communicate to each other ‘the mighty works of God’ and to grow in fraternal communion."
